Grade A&C Wood & Wood Recycling

Grade A Wood

Clean Recycled Wood, classified as Grade A, is a significant waste stream that we handle. This wood typically comes in the form of packaging, pallets, cable drums, and off-cuts from the manufacture of untreated materials.

The clean nature of this wood allows for recycling into new products, animal bedding, horticulture mulches, or utilisation as a fuel for renewable energy generation in installations not subject to the Waste Incineration Directive (non-WID compliant).

Repurposing

Grade A Wood can be repurposed for various applications based on the specific installation requirements. It can be used in the manufacture of pellets and briquettes or shredded into sub-100mm chips.

Maintaining the quality of the material is crucial during recycling. While a small amount of nails and metal fixings is often acceptable, the processing stage is designed to remove contaminants effectively.

It’s important to note that certain wood products, like railway sleepers, fall outside the classification of Grade C Wood. This is because these products are often contaminated with a hazardous coating.

As a result, the presence of such coatings categorises these wood items differently, requiring specialised handling and disposal processes due to the potential environmental and health risks associated with the contaminants.

Grade C Wood

Grade C Wood is predominantly utilised as a biomass fuel for producing electricity and/or heat. However, it is crucial to note that this type of wood waste can only be incinerated in installations compliant with the Waste Incineration Directive (WID).

Grade C Wood is commonly generated at recycling centres, transfer stations, and civil amenity recycling sites. This wood waste stream primarily comprises items like fencing, furniture constructed from board products, and do-it-yourself (DIY) materials.

It often contains a high proportion of panel products such as chipboard, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), ply board, oriented strand board (OSB), and fibreboard.
